2008 ENID second indicators conference (Oslo, May 28-30)

The conference brought together 100 persons and there were over 30 presentations. We did not expect an audience of such a size, which demonstrated the need for a periodic encounter between those dedicated to the design and development of new indicators. It also demonstrated that most new indicators depart from the input-output model based on STI statistics, working on existing publicly available sources and aiming to create what we now label as ‘positioning indicators’. The conference was initiated and closed by two keynote speeches by Benoit Godin and Loet Leydesdorff. We had sessions on human resources and mobility, on third mission indicators in higher education, on the mapping of science, and on innovation. We held a special session on indicators for central and eastern European countries. An open and somewhat heated discussion was held on university rankings and their political role.
The decision was collectively taken to study the transformation of ENID from an informal network hosted by the PRIME project into a fully-fledged not-for-profit legal entity (see 2008 Aix conference for its official birth).
